In an interview with Doug Lombardi, one of Valve’s public relation representatives, The Verge found that while Steam saw an outpouring of support in the form of adoption with Half-Life 2 being exclusive to Steam, the company isn’t sure whether such a decision was good or bad in the long run.

Steam Machines are being built on an open platform concept using Linux. As of now, it is too early to tell if Valve’s decision to not limited its games to the Steam Machine will affect adoption of the new console.
